Why a FTA?
What is FTA Free to Air TV
FTA systems can be defined as a satellite system primarily designed to receive "in the clear" or unscrambled satellite signals At the present time there are 100's of channels of news sports networks special interest programming & ethnic channels & foreign language channels that are available without a subscription The selection is also constantly changing with new channels coming online In the past 5 years most broadcasters have switched their broadcasts to digital although there are still a number of analog broadcasts mostly in the C band range that are
available
The FCC oversees policies rules procedures and standards for licensing
and regulating satellite space and earth station facilities both
domestic and international
Satellite Home Viewer Improvement Act of 1999 The Satellite Home Viewer Improvement Act of 1999 "SHVIA"
significantly modifies the Satellite Home Viewer Act of 1988 the Communications
Act and the US Copyright Act SHVIA is designed to promote competition among
multichannel video programming distributors such as satellite companies and
cable television operators while at the same time increasing the programming
choices available to consumers
How does SHVIA affect
programs that is available to subscribe to Sat TV service?
SHVIA permits satellite companies
to provide local broadcast TV signals to all subscribers who reside in
the local TV station’s market also referred to as a Designated Market
Area "DMA" as defined by Nielsen Media Research This ability
to provide local broadcast channels is commonly referred to as
"local into local" service SHVIA also permits satellite
companies to provide "distant" network broadcast stations to
eligible satellite subscribers
Must a satellite company provide local channels to any
subscriber who wants the channels? No The satellite company has the option of providing local-into-local
service but is not required to do so Some satellite companies
are already providing this service in selected markets
Subscribers should contact their satellite company to determine whether
and when the service will be available in their specific DMA and which
DMA applies to them
What
are Free To Air channels?
FTA channels are digital channels that are not encrypted by
the service provider and require no subscription or monthly
payment They are provided free of charge by the provider and
are perfectly legal to receive with an FTA receiver
Where can I find out what channels are available?
There are many free to air channels available in North America on
satellites such as G10R - AMC4 - Galaxy 25 - AMC 3 etc These channels
are from the USA and from around the world Some channels listed are DVB
FTA Free-To-Air and some are encrypted Pay TV Note that these
lists can become out of date quickly as frequencies and channels change
often With an FTA system you can only watch the unscrambled clear DVB
channels with an F Other scrambled channels are not free and require a
subscription from their provider
Are there any DBS/DSS
channels that are FTA?
Almost all of the channels provided by these companies are NOT FTA
The channels are encrypted & require an authorized receiver & monthly
subscription
What is FTA Television?
Free to air satellite systems can be defined as a satellite system
primarily designed to receive "in the clear" or unscrambled satellite
broadcasts At the present time there are 100's of channels of
news sports networks special interest programming and ethnic channels and
foreign language channels that are available without a subscription The
selection is also constantly changing with new channels coming online and some
old ones going offline or changing their broadcast schemes In the past 5 years
most broadcasters have switched their broadcasts to digital although
there are still a number of analog broadcasts mostly in the C band range
that are available
Introduction The concept of receiving FTA signals dates back to the
inception of satellite broadcasts in the mid 1970's and 1980's where large C/
band satellite systems were a popular way of tapping into hundreds of available
channels from the sky The downside to these systems were extremely large dish
sizes and expensive equipment These made satellite systems prohibitive for many
people However over the years increasingly powerful commercial satellites and
improvements in technology have brought prices and dish sizes down quite
dramatically The mid 1990's saw the introductionof digital direct to home
technology which for the first time allowed main stream users to access a wide
variety of channels not available via their local cable company while enjoying
incredible picture and sound quality all from a dish far smaller than had ever
been seen before The small dish revolution nearly caused the extinction of the
large dish industry which simply could not compete on dish sizingprice or
ease of installation The late 1990's saw the digital revolution spread to the
large dish industry with services such as 4DTV which brought the same digital
picture and sound as the small dish systems to large dish users although a new
and expensive decoder was required for reception The last several years has
seen most broadcasters switch their broadcasts to digital which allowed
broadcasts to be compressed allowing more channels per satellite transponder
and also a superior picture and sound quality As well a common digital
standard known as MPEG2-DVB has been adopted by many broadcasters which allows
all free to air satellite channels that use the Digital Video Broadcast
standard to be received from one satellite decoder Over the years the FTA market has begun to see a small comeback primarily due to an abundance of
programming not available anywhere else such as international and foreign
language channels as well as improved picture and sound quality As the number
of FTA enthusiasts grows the more broadcasters will take the market seriously
make more and better programming options available Did you know you could
watch ABC - NBC - CBS - PBS - MYTV & FOX Networks via satellite for
FREE LEGALLY Remember the days you watched TV with your TV Antenna for
FREE Well you still can do it on satellite Plus hundreds of other
networks and individual channels with popular movies and shows FOR FREE
!
Which receiver? FTA receivers are like cars There
are lots of different models most of which perform
basic functions the same way There are lots of
opinions about which one is best but very few
people have significant experience with more than 1
or 2 models If you're just getting started I'd
suggest that you make sure your first receiver
has blind scanning to help you find channels Even
if you don't have a motor you might feel like
adding one later so it's generally a good idea to
make sure your receiver can drive one After that
it's a question of which cool features you want &
how much you want to spend
Where can I have a dish on my my property?
In general a satellite dish that is
1 meter or less may be installed on
an area that you own or where you have exclusive
use There are some restrictions that apply For
more information please refer to our
fact sheet on Over-the-Air Reception
Devices
Can I use my existing 18" DBS/DSS dish? No FTA Ku channels are available on
satellites with much weaker signal than DSS The
minimum is 30" FTA & DBS / DSS satellites
require different LNBs

Why the SG2100 is
better than the Italian made Stab units & Knock Off SG 2100 sold through
Non-DMSI Dealers:
1. Wind Resistance: According
to the structure of SG2100 it is also good for 140Km/h with 90cm Dish.
2. Corrosion Resistance:
The treated screws we used can pass the Salt-Spray test for 300
Hours.
3. Temperature: Sorry
we didn't mentioned it on our spec. We have made many tests and the SG2100 is
good for -40 degrees C to +80 degrees C. We will add it onto our spec.
4. Sensor: One
sensor is already good enough. Only the one who can't write good software need
2 sensors to reduce the possibility of miss counting. Besides, the count's
precision of SG2100 is 0.0256 degree but not 0.15 degree as STAB mentioned.
5. Precise '0' position:
As everybody knows that SG2100 has very precise 0 degree reference.
We use very smart software to calibrate. No need to adjust the mechanical
parts of SG2100.
6. USALS: USALS
is only a software for the receiver to calculate the Azimuth angles of the
motor according to the Latitude, longitude of the end user and the Satellites
want to aim.
7. Power Consumption: Since
the output power of the Receiver is at least 350mA, 180mA consumption will not
cause any problem. The reason we set the consumption higher than others is to
offer low backlash at any azimuth angle of SG2100. STAB has lower consumption,
however, the backlash is very large while the motor is close to 0 degree.
STAB wants to hint that higher price is equal to good quality, however, it is
not true for the market. It is a responsibility of a good enterprise to offer
good quality with better prices, right?

HOT DISH 90 Dual Satellite Dish Systems
Dish Size
The best way
to determine the exact size of antenna for your project is to check
Lyngsat for satellite coverage maps. Continuing our discussion of the T5
satellite here in Winnipeg a .9m to 1.2 m dish works well. The size
consideration depends on it you are interested in in addition to T5 and
what format that satellite uses (circular or linear) . Most users will
want both Users interested in circular polorization can use the
slightly smaller .9 m. In our Manitoba market the T5 signal drops
dramatically over the length of Lake Winnipeg--here at the south end is
an EIRP of 46 and 43 at the North end. A 46 requires at .9 m dish while
the 43 requires a 1.2 m.
Here is a short step by
step as written by Tim Heinrichs , President DMS :
Normally I would assemble
the motor to the pole and set the elevation according to your
manual. Before installing the dish to the motor, I would use a
compass to aim the motor as close to south as possible, remember your
magnetic deviation. Now install the dish keeping it in line with
the motor and set your declination according to your manual. It's
nearly impossible to set a dish to true south using a compass. A
fraction of a inch at your location will be miles of distance in space
where the satellites are. But don't let that discourage you.
The good news is, if you are close, you will certainly find one of the
close to south satellites. Once you find that signal you will be
able to start using the method of alignment that I described. It
takes time but you will end up with a "close to perfect"
alignment. Remember to make sure your receiver, LNBF, coax, etc. are all
in good working condition by testing them before doing the motor
install. Of course you need to pay attention to the polarity
position of the LNBF. Doing some pre-flight preparation will make
your installation go much smoother. Once your confident that
everything is working, that you know where the satellites are in the
arc, you know one or more transponders on each satellite that you want
to find, and you've sent the wife and kids to the mall for a day of
shopping, you're about ready to begin. You should have your entire
system (including a TV) at the dish location. You CANNOT use the
"holler when you see a picture" method for a motor
install. You need to be able to see the changes on your receiver
meters the instant you make them. You need a TV to confirm which
satellite you're on. Make sure your declination is set correctly
and don't move it again. You're ready. Find that first
satellite by looking for the one that's closest to south. Make
sure the receiver has the correct information. Move the motor only
small amounts giving your receiver time to react should it find a
signal. If you don't find that first satellite, re-evaluate your
south direction and move your azimuth only a little in the direction you
feel is best. Just
be patient and use a little common sense and you'll soon be watching all
your favorite channels and surfing for new ones. If your receiver
has a decent blind search feature you'll soon become a feed hunter.
AMC 4 and Galaxy 25 at the same time Using a 2 LNBF Bracket second LNBF and 2x1 DiSEqC switch allows
you to get both AMC 4 and Galaxy 25 at the same time The LNBF that is mounted on
the LNBF support arm is pointing to AMC 4 and the additional LNBF that was added
is pointing to Galaxy 25 Using a 2x1 DiSEqC switch allows for only one cable run
to the satellite receiver
Galaxy 25 and Galaxy 26 on the same dish You can use
almost any LNBF We first aligned the dish to AMC 4 using the LNBF on the dishes
LNBF support arm Then we installed the second LNBF and aligned the LNBF only for
Galaxy 25 You'll notice that the LNBFs seem to be over lapping a little That's
because the satellites are only four degrees apart Pay close attention to the
angle of the second LNBF Please note that this installation requires some experience
